Robert Ducan used his entire life savings to save a beloved building in Val Marie. It now stands as a bed and breakfast for guests.
Adam recalls the building having lots of water damage when his father bought it in 1996. They had to pull up the floors, which were later re-laid, and re-plaster everything.
The convent was built in 1939. Shortly thereafter, nuns through the Sisters of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary would teach high school there. “When she came back for a visit, half the town showed up and they followed her around like she was a movie star,” he said. “She made such an impact on everybody’s lives that they were just enamoured by her.”Article contentIn the early 1960s, a new public school was built; the convent was no longer needed. The three remaining sisters had sold the building to another family, who operated a care home for a number of years.
Like many his age, he felt trapped, as if he were missing out. He left and lived in numerous cities across Canada. However, when life in Montreal became stressful, it was enough to make him want to return.
