Voters in Montreal’s downtown Saint-Henri—Sainte-Anne riding turned their backs on the Quebec Liberals in a provincial byelection Monday, choosing to elect Québec solidaire candidate Guillaume Cliche-Rivard instead. For the left-leaning Québec solidaire, the win boosts their numbers in the national assembly from 11 to 12 – the threshold for official party status – which brings a greater budget and more weight in assembly proceedings.
For the Liberals, leaderless since Dominique Anglade resigned as leader over a dispute with former Liberal MNA Marie-Claude Nichols, who now sits as an independent, the result maintains the party’s official opposition status with 19 members.
