Three-time NBA champion LeBron James is trying his hand at writing children’s books. Illustrated by New York Times bestselling children’s book artist Nina Mata.
“Books have the ability to teach, inspire and bring people together. That’s why these books, and the opportunity to get children and parents reading together, mean so much to me,” James said this week.
“Most importantly, we wanted to make sure these stories were ones that every single kid could see themselves in.” In an effort to help pupils in his home town of Akron, Ohio in the US, James started the I Promise School, a public school where students get the opportunity to earn full-tuition college scholarships, in 2018.
James’ debut book is a picture book titled I Promise, and will be released in August. A second book, a novel for pupils between the ages of eight and 12, will be published next year. Suzanne Murphy, president and publisher of HarperCollins Children’s Books, said: “The philanthropic work that LeBron James does off the court, including the education that he’s providing to the students at the I Promise School is remarkable. With a universal message that encourages everyone to always strive for greatness, I Promise will resonate with readers everywhere.”
