The department says it has focused on ensuring all schools will have the supplies they need to start the year.

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Education says it is confident and ready for the resumption of teaching and learning in 2025.

The department says it has focused on learning materials, furniture, transport, nutrition programmes, and safety, ensuring all schools have the supplies they need to start the year. There are 2,088 schools across the province that bought learning and teaching support materials, with around 200 ordering their textbooks and stationery directly from the department, while 1,886 schools bought directly from suppliers.

Gauteng Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said supplies would be delivered to all schools as soon as they reopened. "The deliveries were finalised between the 1st and 31st of October 2024. The only materials that would have been put aside are for just a few schools identified as high-risk. Those schools likely experienced burglaries or break-ins during the school break, so we have not delivered to those schools. However, as soon as schools open, we should be in a position to finalise that process."

Mabona said the department also received around 97% of the textbooks from learners who had changed grades.
