, purportedly from a Wagner representative, detailed plans for the mercenaries to return equipment to the defence ministry on the day of the mutiny, ahead of a 1 July deadline for private militias to be incorporated into the Russian army.
General Surovikin was acting as a mediator and “guarantor of prevention of any provocation by Wagner”, according to the channel. But defence ministry chiefs later learned that the return of equipment was cover for a plot to capture defence minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of general staff Valery Gerasimov, suggesting General Surovikin may have known of the plan.
After the uprising failed, “it was decided to isolate the conspirators among the generals without revealing their involvement in the coup,” the crime news outlet reported.
