Petruzzelli, who has been playing with the AHL’s Marlies, was expected to be in Carolina in time to back up Erik Källgren for Sunday evening’s game against the Hurricanes. Samsonov hurt his knee in Saturday night’s 2-1 win over Boston, with Källgren holding the fort in the third period. Samsonov’s long-term status was unknown. Murray remains on long-term injured reserve with a torn adductor, suffered after his first game of the season.
Petruzzelli is 6-0-0 with the Marlies this season. A draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings , the 23-year-old from Wilbraham, Mass. has been in the Leafs system since the 2021-22 season, when he played mostly for the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers after graduating from Quinnipiac University.
