NEW: Leafs’ Michael Bunting suspended three games for hit to head of Lightning’s Erik Cernak
The NHL’s department of player safety suspended Bunting three games for an illegal hit to the head of Tampa defenceman Erik Cernak in the second period of the opener.from the game. Cernak also missed the remainder of the game.
Bunting practised as an extra on Wednesday, with coach Sheldon Keefe juggling his lines in anticipation of being without Bunting, but added the team would feel the loss. “He’s a guy who plays with our top players and has the ability to score goals for us, plays with lots of energy,” Keefe said of Bunting. “He’s come to be an important part of our team. He put himself into a bad spot here. But we have options if needed and we’ll move things around accordingly.”
