It’s a testimony to Zach Hyman’s aura in the Maple Leaf universe that he couldn’t go anywhere the past two days without giving or receiving a greeting.
“I played a lot and spent a lot of time with those guys,” Hyman said of William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Nazem Kadri, Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews. “We grew up together on the Marlies and as first-year pros. I definitely stay in touch with them. We were at Mitchy’s wedding this summer.” The big raise he deserved after 70 points in his last 94 games was near impossible for the Leafs to offer in 2021, though there was talk general manager Kyle Dubas made a last-ditch effort that almost swayed Hyman from the open market.
“Every step of the way — I think this is a message for all kids — I haven’t had the easiest journey in that I was never the best player on my team,” Hyman said. “That, and nobody thought that I’d continue to progress.
