Texas' water infrastructure includes an estimated 647,640 lead service lines, one of the highest counts in the United States.
Unfortunately for Texans, the state has the fifth-highest number of lead service lines in the country, according to a four-year study by the. But all four states that had more such lines than Texas, the nation's second-largest state, had smaller populations. Florida, No. 3 in population, had the highest share of the nation's lead service lines at 12.6 percent. California, the nation's largest state, had just 0.15 percent.
There were around 647,640 such pipes present in the Lone Star State, the EPA said Tuesday as it released the findings of its latest quadrennial Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey and Assessment. That's around 7 percent of the lead pipes in the nation, the agency estimates.
