Jack Leach grabbed three wickets and James Anderson another one to reduce New Zealand to 96 for six at tea on day two of the second test against England on Saturday, still 339 runs adrift of the tourists' declared first innings total of 435 for eight.
England, however, are in the box seat, courtesy of a 302-run partnership between Harry Brook and Joe Root. Anderson struck with his third ball after the break, having number four Will Young caught behind for two. Opener Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls made starts but were culpable in their dismissals from botched reverse-sweeps off Leach.
Leach and Pope combined again on the last ball, the fielder showing brilliant anticipation at silly point to pluck another one-handed catch as Mitchell hit off the face of the bat.
