July 06, 2024 10:00 PMTucked away in the heart of Choa Chu Kang, lies a new Nasi Padang store – bursting with fusion dishes and modern flavours married with traditional technique. But behind the food lies a story. A tale of a young man named Aliff, who left behind a promising career in law to honour his mother by preserving her culinary legacy.
“My mother’s love was felt through her cooking and so I wanted to continue spreading that love through her recipes” the 29 year old chirped. Aliff's earliest and most cherished memories are of him standing beside his mother in their modest kitchen, watching her expertly mix spices and ingredients to create mouth-watering Malay dishes. She would patiently teach him the secrets of making the perfect rendang, the tender beef simmered in coconut milk and spices, or the sambal goreng, a spicy stir-fry of tempeh and tofu. The kitchen was their sanctuary, a place where love and tradition intertwined through food.
Just a few months ago, Aliff's world was shattered when his mother, who had long struggled with mental health issues, took her own life. Her death was a devastating blow to Aliff, who had always been close to her. The kitchen, once filled with the aromatic scents of traditional Malay cuisine, became a place of sorrow and memories.
