Sen. Chris Elliott, a Republican from Baldwin County, is upset Alabama Department of Archives and History hosted a lecture on the state's LGBTQ+ history. He said that the said he plans to bring legislation next year to change the department.

after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Alabama’s district map likely violated the Voting Rights Act. A House version of the bill by Rep. Ernie Yarbrough, a Republican from Morgan County, also did not come up for a vote. The Legislature returns for its regular session next year on Feb. 6.

“The History and Archives is a part of Alabama history, like it or not,” Todd said. “It’s like you want to pick and choose the history we want to talk about? No one wants that. Or maybe they do. But we are everywhere. We are in your schools, maybe teaching your kids and raising your own kids and in your faith communities. We are everywhere.”was scheduled in the summer of 2022.

“I wasn’t aware of it until I started hearing from my constituents, which is exactly how this is supposed to work,” Elliott said. “There was an opportunity for Archives and History to say, ‘Look, we understand we’ve made a mistake. We understand this is not something the Alabama Legislature is in favor of. This is not something the people of Alabama are necessarily in favor of. And we’re not going to do it again.
