Structure imposed on nursing, social work and speech-language pathology disciplines ‘broke something that was not broken,’ says nursing prof
Only weeks after Laurentian University finally exited creditor protection late last year, a university governing body voted in December to undo one of the consequences of LU’s 22-month-long journey under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act.
The previous structure at Laurentian “was not broke, and it did not need fixing,” said McMillan-Boyles at the meeting. “So what actually happened with the imposed structure is it actually broke something that was not broken.” McMillan-Boyles said there was some urgency to the motion, “given the fact that we have an interim director… until the end of December. We are now on our sixth go around for a selection of the director. Six times now in 20 months where we have no one's willing to take on the unimaginable and insurmountable task that is the role of a director of this mega-school.”
That’s because if the director of the new mega-school is from one of the three involved disciplines, they’re unable to appropriately lead accreditation processes for the other two. “Very simply, without a director, our processes have become unnecessarily complicated and very time consuming,” she said at the Dec. 13 meeting. “Really important, necessary work has been downloaded onto faculty members, especially program co-ordinators.”
“For example, because of the CCAA, our graduate site visit was delayed about a year and a half and is upcoming this fall. As a consequence of this, we've had to produce progress reports every six months, responding to reviewer queries and updating them about our current situation. I've been involved in writing two of these reports, and there's another one due in April. Normally, this would be the responsibility and the work of a director.
