Ninety-nine police departments across the state are receiving funding to deploy additional patrol.
Nearly 100 law enforcement agencies across New Jersey are receiving grant money to beef up patrols as part of a two-week crackdown on impaired driving leading up to Labor Day.
Ninety-eight municipal police department and one county sheriff’s office will share $616,770 in grant funding from the state Highway Traffic Safety division for their roles in the “Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over” campaign, the Office of the Attorney General said. It began Friday and runs through Sept. 4
During the 2022 crackdown, cops arrested 169 drivers who they say were impaired and issued 348 seat belt tickets, 240 distracted driving tickets and 804 speeding tickets. Nationwide 13,384 individuals died in drunk-driving crashes in 2021, the last year for which data is available. That’s equivalent to one fatality every 39 minutes, officials noted.
