After eluding authorities for over three months, Songezo 'Mashiya' Vuma was apprehended at a bus station in Qonce, bringing to an end the manhunt for the final suspect in the September 2024 Lusikisiki mass shooting.
Songezo 'Mashiya' Vuma, 20, was arrested at a bus station in Qonce on Tuesday, November 26, after being on the run for over three months. Vuma was the only outstanding suspect in the Lusikisiki mass shooting , where 18 people were killed in September 2024. A Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit team tracked Vuma down inside a waiting bus.
Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Nomthetheleli Mene welcomed his capture and applauded the public for sharing information that led to the arrest of Vuma and seven other suspects. On Tuesday, the seven men appeared in court for the first time since the first suspect, parolee Siphosoxolo Myekethe, was arrested on 7 October. Myekethe, 45; Aphiwe Ndende, 25; Lwando Antony Shakes, 31; Bonga Hintsa, 31; Mawethu Nomdlembu, 36; Zenande Paya, 38; and Mzukisi Ndamase, 46, face additional charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Ndamase, the alleged murder mastermind, was apprehended at a correctional facility where he is serving a life sentence for murder and robbery
