HAMILTON – The Hamilton Tiger\u002DCats finally found a way to win\u003B the misery goes on for the Ottawa Redblacks.
Drama? The Redblacks have seen a bit too much of that this season. This one came down to the final play. With no time on the clock, Lewis Ward’s 53-yard field goal attempt – into the wind – came up a yard, maybe less, of going through the uprights for the win. Yep, this will sting, just like the other four losses have hurt.
“I did some good things, I did some bad things,” said Evans. “I have to watch the film and get better. This sucks, especially on my birthday, but it is what it is. We have to get to work next week and look forward to our next game. On their first possession, Anthony Johnson caught a Dane Evans pass for 41 yards, but fumbled after being popped by Ottawa’s Hakeem Bailey. It was picked up by Randall Evans and Ottawa took over on its 19. After a Redblacks punt, the Ticats coughed the ball up again – this time on a fumble by returner Lawrence Woods III. It was recovered by Antoine Pruneau at the Hamilton 34. A 49-yard field goal attempt by Ward was wide right and Woods returned it to the Hamilton 28.
With less than two minutes left, Evans found Dunbar for a 36-yard connection . Evans hit Johnson for a 15-yard touchdown pass – the receiver’s first career CFL score. The convert made it 18-10. After taking a punt, Woods was racing toward the end zone with less than three minutes left, but, with Redblacks in pursuit, fell to the ground at the Ottawa eight-yard line. It was an 88-yard return. Three plays later, Schiltz tossed an interception, picked off by Hakeem Bailey at the Hamilton four.
