The last decade or so has seen cocktail culture go nowhere but up. Scotch whisky, bourbon, gin, tequila, and rum have exploded in terms of selection and new offerings, as have premixed cocktails . Calgary’s liquor landscape is changing in other ways as well; the province, in all its wisdom, is allowing 7-Elevens to serve alcohol as they are technically “restaurants.” In a press release, they offered this: “Customers can now enjoy a variety of offerings including chicken wings, chicken strips, sandwiches, potato wedges, taquitos as well as the store’s signature Big Bite hot dogs.
While I’m on that subject, a great dry martini calls for great vermouth, and as such, I’m happy to report that a longtime favourite, Noilly Prat, is back in the Alberta market after a 10-year absence. It’s made in France, and it offers a bone-dry flavour profile that includes a sherry-wine base with notes of orange bitters and spices with a slight saline finish.
