After his R10goesalongway initiative raised R2 million in a week for university students, media personality Lasizwe Dambuza says he has fulfilled a long-term goal. He started the crowdfunding initiative, asking for R10 donations.
As hundreds of university students took to the streets in peaceful protests to demand free education at various campuses countrywide earlier this month, Dambuza decided to make a difference.By the end of that week, he had raised R2 million.
“So, I started off with R10 000 to be donated towards helping a student with either registration or tuition fees. I didn’t know how to distribute that [cash], so I thought of going live and getting people to give me ideas on what to do with the R10 000. “I did not expect it to be such a bold and cool campaign ... Everyone, from all parts of South Africa, came through and this campaign did not segregate, it accommodated everyone in all spheres of life,” he said.
Education is really close to my heart because I didn’t get an opportunity to go to a tertiary institution because of financial problems. He was referring to Mthokozisi Ntumba, who was shot dead two weeks ago, when the police opened fired on protesting students in Braamfontein.Read:Dambuza said that five hours after #R10goesalongway was launched, R53 000 had been raised.
