How Stewart rose from “suckering” lemon trees in Strathmore – his worst job ever, removing thorny sucker growths from citrus trees – to the top of his sportswriting profession is contai…

Like so many young sports fans in 1958, 11-year-old Larry Stewart often had his radio next to his ear in bed at night to hear the Los Angeles Dodgers gamesannounced by the famous Vin Scully.

Rick Reilly, best-selling author and 11-time national sportswriter of the year, says on the back cover of the book, “If you love stories from inside the superstar’s limo, or at the team owner’s table, or at the announcer’s elbow, you’re going to love this book…. Larry Stewart seems to have been around almost every big moment in LA sports history.”

All of a sudden, Pat Riley, then a Lakers player, sat down beside him to get his shoes shined. Stewart was a little shy and said meekly, “I’m Larry Stewart from the Herald and I am going to be on the trip to Chicago with you.” In his book, Stewart writes, “Riley gave me a strange look. I did not say anything else.”

Stewart was born in Visalia in 1946 but grew up in Strathmore and that’s where he got his start in journalism which spans eight decades. He currently does freelance writing for the Southern California Newspaper Group, which includes the Press-Telegram and 10 other newspapers. On his first night at the Bee, Stewart met another Bee prep writer, Doug Krikorian — who was from Fowler, a small town near Fresno. He’d eventually go to work for the Herald-Examiner until it folded in 1989.
