Romy Ancer, educator at Bellavista School, recalls some 28 years ago, meeting a little boy, rocking back and forth, flapping his hands wildly next to his ears, as if to block out the world around him. He made no eye contact or attempted to engage with any one around him. Ancer's supervisor asked her what she thought his problems were. Sure enough he was referred for long-term institutional care. Fortunately we have progressed.
