The 21‑year‑old winger who joined Kaizer Chiefs from Stellenbosch has been honoured with the number 70 jersey, setting the stage for his first match against Golden Arrows in the MTN8 quarter‑finals.
Langelihle Phili, the 21‑year‑old South African winger, has officially joined the Kaizer Chiefs after a protracted negotiation that saw several player movements between the two clubs.
The player, formerly of Stellenbosch FC, became a free transfer asset for the Glamour Boys in a deal that also saw Ashleigh du Preez and Given Msimango move the opposite way, all aiming to strengthen their respective squads. A key element of the new signing that has drawn the attention of Chiefs supporters is the jersey number that will represent him on the field.
While at Stellenbosch he sported the iconic number 11, a designation now occupied by veteran midfielder Luke Baartman in the Chiefs' ranks. During a recent photo session at the team's village, Phili was photographed wearing a fresh, sleeveless shirt bearing the newly allotted number 70, indicating that the number will likely feature on his official file and matchday kit.
The number 70 has a cult following within the club's merchandise fans, with a handful of past players donned the same figure in the past decade. Its adoption by Phili will signal a fresh chapter for the striker as he prepares for a high‑profile debut. Fans anticipate his first appearance in the upcoming quarter‑final of the MTN8 cup, where the Chiefs will face the Golden Arrows on Sunday evening in Pretoria.
With the competition in full swing, the club's management believes that Phili's pace and finishing ability will provide a much‑needed edge against the Arrows' reigning defensive strength. Statistically, Phili has proven himself with a blend of goals and creative assists for Stellenbosch over 72 competitive appearances. He found the net 11 times while delivering two assists over two seasons, with the most productive stretch occurring during the last campaign where his contributions spanned 26 league appearances and yielded seven goals.
In the aggregate, he recorded nine goals across 39 appearances, underscoring a consistent target‑tendency that Chiefs' coaching staff aim to leverage in crucial fixtures. Beyond his on‑field responsibilities, Phili's arrival signals a shift in the Chiefs' attacking philosophy, as the club seeks to inject youthful dynamism into a squad that has shown dominant form domestically. Coaches have noted that his style mirrors that of successful migration from the Premier Soccer League and may complement the existing roster's tactical preferences.
Whether his debut at number 70 will pave the way for future successes remains to be seen, but the anticipation across fan forums feels palpable and the team's supporters are hopeful as the next night unfolds
