Bradford Hickman, of Flossmoor, who died in January, was remembered by friends and team members on the boat Mise En Place last week during the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac.Yet over the last decade and a half as the age of social media dawned and then grew to taint nearly every aspect of life, I became internet “friends” with many of those acquaintances from 40-plus years ago.

As the first Mackinac race since his friend’s death approached, Davis asked to rejoin the Mise En Place team for one more trip up Lake Michigan, and they accepted him back. An accomplished interior designer who also had established an art gallery in Homewood where he imported and exported pieces internationally, Bradford helped Davis with a home remodeling project, which started as a business deal and ended with a stronger friendship. On the boat, Bradford “took over one of the most difficult jobs — working the foredeck,” Davis said. “That’s where the sail changes take place and also where people get the wettest. He took on a huge challenge, but he enjoyed it.

Davis hadn’t raced on the same crew as Bradford since that 2013 run, and with his friend’s death leaving an opening on the team, he felt the time was right to return for one more shot at it.
