It was an integral piece in convicting Williams, who was found guilty Friday after jurors determined he killed 14-year-old Wendy Jerome in Rochester on Thanksgiving 40 years ago.RPD Captain Frank Umbrino with the Major Crimes Unit was relieved that after decades of uncertainty, Jerome's family has finally seen justice be served.
"Words cannot describe what these guys are feeling, what I'm feeling, and what the entire unit is feeling," Umbrino said following Friday's conviction. "The familial DNA and any type of DNA databases we have are critical to law enforcement.""One of the things that we really need to look at moving forward is how to allow investigators, especially in investigations of this nature, to access the information that is readily available quicker," he explained.
Umbrino said the department has a roomful of cold cases, but finding time for available investigators and prosecutors is a challenge."Time and resources are a huge things, and we need to be able to utilize the DNA that is out there," Umbrino said. "DNA doesn't lie."
