The lucky shopper now plans to track down the family behind the historic artefact

The main appeal of car boot sales is grabbing a bargain, along with discovering an interesting antique or item to upcycle. And Russell Benson thought her had done just that when he purchased a shell case for £7 during his weekly trip to a car boot sale in Preston.

The savvy buyer took a deep-dive into online research and quickly stumbled across an article in the Liverpool Echo about World War I widow Kitty Eckersley. She was seven months pregnant when her husband Percy Morter died at the Battle of the Somme.Percy has previously had a bullet hand-carved for his beloved before his tragic death, before his tragic death.

"I thought this was definitely made by a Lancashire solider in the trench in 1916 for his wife, or his girlfriend called Kitty. I just thought that's amazing."
