Raven Ridge Wildlife Center took in an eagle found in a field that tested off the charts for lead poisoning. The bird was in an oxygen chamber for at least three weeks.
Golden rainbow trout in the raceway at Huntsdale State Fish Hatchery.Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Washington Boro is asking for donations of trout to feed an eagle recovering from lead poisoning.
Young said the center immediately started treating the eagle for lead poisoning, which is a very long and expensive process. The bird was in an oxygen chamber for at least three weeks, during which they spent almost $1,000 on oxygen. Rehabilitators fed the eagle by tube and then by hand until about five days ago, when it started eating trout on its own, Young said. The bird has been eating one trout every day since.
Birds can get lead poisoning from picking up pieces of metal in animals or carcasses from fishing equipment or ammunition. To decrease lead poisoning, the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center encourages hunters and anglers to switch from lead gear to copper, steal or tungsten.
