Firefighters battling the removal of the second appliance from a Lanarkshire fire station gained hundreds more supporters for their campaign at a community awareness event.

Firefighter Paul Bell, who is the Hamilton branch secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, told Lanarkshire Live: “A lot of the public weren’t aware of the circumstances and were shocked to learn that their area is going to be losing a fire appliance. Local crews previously staged a rally outside South Lanarkshire Council’s headquarters after the decision was first announced earlier in the summer, while Hamilton firefighters were also among 400 FBU members attending a recent demonstration in Glasgow city centre as part of the union’s Cuts Leave Scars campaign.
