'Jane (A Ghost Story)' was written by David McFadzean, whose 'Servant of Two Masters' was presented at the Coronado theater in 2011.
Lamb’s Players Theatre’s upcoming “Jane Eyre”-themed production is not to be confused with Paul Gordon and John Caird’s Broadway musical drama that enjoyed a pre-Broadway tryout at La Jolla Playhouse 24 years ago.
Based on Charlotte Brontë’s 1847 classic novel, “Jane: A Ghost Story” is directed by Lamb’s artistic director Robert Smyth and stars Natasha Harris as English governess Jane Eyre and Manny Fernandes as her employer Edward Rochester, master of Thornfield Hall.In McFadzean’s version at Lamb’s, the story is set in the 1920s rather than in the novel’s presumed 19th-century time period .
“He came to me with an idea before COVID about a ‘Jane Eyre’ adaptation,” Smyth said. “I thought it would be great. It fits in a variety of ways with what we do. We put it on our ‘to develop’ project list during the pandemic. I’m glad we’re now able to do it.” But Smyth pointed out that “One of the great things about the theater is you can tell any story because it’s such an imaginative art form. There are ways you can jump time. We’ve done a lot of pieces that can take a big idea and condense it well. David’s done a beautiful job keeping the crux of the story, the truth of the story, the fullness of the story, while being able to move it quickly.”
