Reports suggest that a LaLiga star is set to switch his international allegiance from Europe to Africa in an effort to help a particular nation's ambitions at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. SLInt MORE:
According to Ghanaian sports broadcaster Nathaniel Obeng, Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams has decided to commit his international career to the Black Stars.
The 27-year-old, who was born in the Basque region of Bilbao, is currently in the West African nation with his younger brother, with rumours suggesting that their visit may coincide with the beginning of the process of getting their Ghanaian passports. Both Inaki and his brother Nico, who also plays for Bilbao, represented Spain at youth level, with the former even making an appearance for the 2010 FIFA World Cup winners' senior side in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina back in 2016.It would appear that Inaki has had a change of heart following Ghana's qualification for the global showpiece in Qatar later this year, having renounced any possibility of playing for the Black Stars back in 2021.
"I'm grateful for where I grew and became who I am. Ghana tried to convince me, but I was born in Spain, in Bilbao," the forward said last year, as per"I would be comfortable with Ghana, I'm sure, but I shouldn't be there." The Ghana Football Association has been trying to recruit a number of players who were born in Europe with Ghanaian ancestry, with the likes of Tariq Lamptey and Callum Hudson-Odoi having also visited the African nation in recent months in the hopes of completing a similar international switch.Share
