Abdul-Jabaar's record chase received much more fanfare last year and James may prefer the quieter expectations for what he expects to do on the court. James' season-high average for assists came back in 2020 during his first championship season with the Lakers after an impressive 10.2 mark.Johnson's career got tragically cut short due to his AIDS diagnosis and his career average of 11.2 assists per game trumps James' meager 7.2 mark.
Once again the longevity James holds over most of NBA history means he's right on Magic's tail this late into his career in another record for his illustrious career.
