The popular Lake View picnic area along Lake Michigan in Beverly Shores will close temporarily this fall while it is being rebuilt and improved, Indiana Dunes National Park has announced.

It will close for the construction project immediately after the Labor Day weekend and is expected to reopen around the Memorial Day weekend next year. The current Lake View includes a paved plaza with picnic tables, benches and restrooms, and it formerly had a boardwalk area near the lake.In addition to the picnic area, the rebuilt site will have a handicap-accessible concrete ramp to a concrete pad near the lake with concrete benches, and matting to make the beach accessible for wheelchairs. That’s why the new ramp and seating will be built out of concrete, national park public information officer Bruce Rowe said.
Because the Lake View restrooms will be closed during the construction project, the Dunbar Beach restrooms, about 200 yards west of Lake View, will remain open through the winter, the park’s announcement said. The Beverly Shores parking lot just east of Lake View is open only to vehicles with parking permits issued by the town. The Red Lantern Inn, which had guest rooms as well as dining with a spectacular view of Lake Michigan, was built in the late 1960s around the former Lenard’s Casino.
The National Park Service purchased the site in the early 1970s, a few years after Congress created the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The restaurant continued operating until 1986, when it was closed and, soon after, demolished.
