Investigations point to sewage runoff from Marimba as the cause of the contamination.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has launched a broad investigation into the contamination of Lake Chivero after several animals and fish died last week. Four white rhinos, three zebras, birds, and livestock perished after consuming water laced with cyanobacteria. ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo revealed in a statement that initial findings indicate 1,000 fish also died.

Preliminary investigations suggest that sewage runoff from the Marimba area is polluting multiple bays in the lake, creating hazardous conditions for aquatic life. High pollution levels lead to an overgrowth of algae, which depletes oxygen in the water, resulting in widespread fish mortality. As wind patterns change, the team anticipates further impact on fish populations across the lake. ZimParks recently blamed Harare City Council for releasing untreated sewage into the lake, a vital water source and recreational area for many. However, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume stated that it is not the time for assigning blame and acknowledged that the City Council is not solely responsible for the sewage reaching the lake
