The exhibit was the idea of former Village President Christine Letchinger, who also served as a LBHM board member. She wanted to share the story of Lake Michigan and recognizing the role it plays in the lives of the community, according to LBHM spokeswoman Adrienne Fawcett.

“The board wanted to continue the drive that she started. So they did.” Fawcett said.

Upon entering, patrons are greeted with a series of large panels, each featuring segments of the lake’s history traced, including drone photography by Lake Forest High School student Christopher Haydon. There is also a corresponding display of paintings, poetry and photographs from local artists. Some panels feature highlights of what will likely be happy memories for many local residents, showcasing how the lake has been a popular swimming and board location, plus the formation of the Lake Bluff Yacht Club in 1961.However, there are sobering mentions of raw sewage dumped into the lake for decades, the modern effects of climate change and its impact on Lake Michigan, vacillating water levels and beach erosion.

Retired Village Engineer George Russell said he dealt with many issues tied into the lake, and emphasized what the large body of water means for the community.
