Labour pledges to introduce measures to end sewage dumping in Britain's waterways

Labour would introduce mandatory monitoring of sewage facilities “so we know exactly where this is happening” and automatic fines for rule-breakers “to make sure that those who are responsible are held to account”

Labour’s sewage Bill would also implement a legally binding target to reduce sewage dumping. The proposals would create a new requirement for the Secretary of State to publish a strategy on the reduction of sewage discharges, as well as regular economic impact assessments.

The party has accused the Government of “regurgitating” old ideas, after Environment Secretary Therese Coffeywhich could see water companies face unlimited fines over pollution – a pledge that has already been touted by several of her predecessors.
