The Shadow Chancellor and her team have been reluctant to spell out the details of how they will overhaul the economy

Labour has been intent on rebuilding its credentials as a party of economic credibility in the wake of the Jeremy Corbyn years, when businesses and markets shunned its left-wing agenda.

The Shadow Chancellor insists that all Labour policies are signed off by her department to avoid any risk the party will be accused of lax policy-making.: “As somebody who is quite ambitious for my brief, I can tell you that Rachel Reeves and the shadow Treasury team do not allow anything out of the door that hasn’t been through the rigour of making sure that it’s affordable, costed and the returns are really clear.

Ms Reeves says she would restore the 45p additional rate of income tax, impose a windfall tax and oil and gas producers and take corporation tax up to 21 per cent from 19 per cent. It is far from clear that these moves would raise enough money to restore many of the austerity-era cuts.
