Labour must act centrist to get elected and into power, then it can go hard-left ✒️ Martha_Gill for ipaperviews

The thing is, Brits don’t tend to go in for left wing leaders who seem exciting and radical. They find that sort of thing alarming. They get a bad gut feeling about it. Right wing radicalism – there’s a thing we can tolerate, for a while. But on the left it is a frightening prospect. The electorate didn’t go for Jeremy Corbyn,, or indeed Ed Miliband, who earnestly promised he would be “radical as Attlee or Wilson”.

Having an actually radical agenda, now, that’s a different thing. Voter’s views on this tend to be more complicated. A surveyand found half of them couldn’t say whether even the most stereotypical political positions were right or left. Thinking minimum wage is too low, for example was only identified by 53 per cent of respondents as a left wing view.

In fact when it comes to actual policies, people tend to be much more left wing than they think they are.which asked people their party allegiance and to place themselves on a scale between left and rightwing , and then asked them how much they agreed with various ideological positions found a mismatch. Loyal Tories, ranking themselves a 7.5, were “objectively” placed as a five when their actual views were examined. Ukip supporters, who thought they were at 6.

The best advice for Labour, then, is to appear less radical than it is. Give off the vibes of an unthreatening centrist party – then once in power please the public with some left wing policies. This is a well trodden path. Harold Wilson’s government suspended capital punishment, legalised homosexuality, ended prison floggings and lifted the ban on abortion.
