Juliet Campbell is currently a cabinet member of Lewisham Council in London

Labour has confirmed that its candidate to be Broxtowe MP at the next election will step down as a senior member of a London council if elected. Juliet Campbell was selected as Labour's Broxtowe candidate in March 2023 after a selection row which saw calls for the national party to intervene.

The Broxtowe Labour candidate was born and raised in Bilborough, but one of her current roles sees her act as a cabinet member for Lewisham Council. Councillor Campbell is the authority's cabinet member for communities, refugees and safety and represents the Blackheath ward - an area around 150 miles away from Broxtowe.

Labour has now confirmed that Councillor Campbell would step down from the council on which she has served since 2018, given that her current term is not due to end until 2026. Councillor Campbell's selection came after a Labour Party row over Greg Marshall not making the shortlist.Mr Marshall, who has been Labour's Broxtowe candidate in the previous two general elections, claimed he had been "blocked" by the Labour Party from standing.

Speaking after her selection, Juliet Campbell said: "I have worked and campaigned all my life for people to get what’s fair. For carers to be recognised and supported, for a Living Wage so people can afford a decent standard of living, for patients to be put at the heart of our health service. "I know a Labour Government will improve so many lives, and I will work tirelessly as the Broxtowe candidate to get this area the voice it needs."
