That’s the call from people who have been left displaced by the recent floods. They say they feel that they have been “abandoned” in community halls.

With just under two months since the floods, people living in community halls are demanding answers from the government about their situation. “Community halls are not conducive living [environments]. They are cold and there is no privacy. You cannot have women and men living together like this forever,” he said.

Mavundla said the municipality was not responsible for building housing as this falls within the domain of the provincial government; however the City is planning to build flood-resistant infrastructure.
