Ohio State's win over Penn State taught Kyle McCord a lesson he desperately needed to learn.
Kyle McCord has yet to be burned by his eagerness to make a play. But he's flirted with that danger enough to understand that he must learn from his mistakes.Those decisions are part one of the most important parts of his development that has been put on hold for much of the past two seasons until he finally won the starting job in 2023. There’s a time to try making a play and there’s a time to cut your losses.
McCord is still learning a concept that he classified as ‘weighing the risk with the reward.’ It’s been a long time since he’s dealt with what can happen when the need to make something happen goes wrong. He was a five-star recruit in high school who could effortlessly push the ball down the field while winning three straight state championships. Then he was C.J.
Justin Fields had the tendency to hold onto the ball longer than what was ideal. Sometimes it led to Heisman moments up in Ann Arbor and other times it got him in trouble with sacks and interceptions. “You want to scramble out of the pocket and make this big-time plays,” McCord said. “But you can’t put the team at risk when you’re trying to do that. If the opportunity presents itself and it’s clean you have to take it. But at the same time, you just have to be smart about it.”
None of these plays have killed Ohio State’s chances of winning a game longterm and two of them even eased thanks to a well-timed penalty flag or instant replay. But McCord knows he’s playing with fire the longer this tendency goes unchecked.
