has urged motorists to exercise caution and those residing in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground due to adverse weather conditions.
The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds. The weather service said that conditions are highly favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms with large, damaging hail, heavy downpours, and robust and destructive surface winds in the western regions of the province.
In addition, a significant lowering of the altitude at which sub-zero temperatures occur, often referred to as the “freezing level,” is expected to result in disruptive snowfall over the Drakensberg mountains and Van Reenens Pass on the N3 highway in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday. Furthermore, widespread showers and thundershowers are expected over most parts of KZN on Saturday and Sunday. Models indicate a rainfall accumulation of more than 50mm in places along the coast.Following the warning, KwaZulu-Natal COGTA said it is closely monitoring and warning the public regarding inclement weather that may lead to flooding and property damage.
“Our disaster response teams are on high alert to monitor this situation. We strongly advise all residents across the province to exercise vigilance during this period, especially as we are still recovering from the devastation caused by last week’s heavy rains and strong winds,” he said.
