The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has retracted its vehicle donation to the eThekwini Neighbourhood Watch, citing a lack of resources for ongoing maintenance. The vehicles, originally intended to support the group's crime-fighting efforts, were returned to the police in December 2023. The provincial government acknowledged a shortfall in planning regarding maintenance costs, including fuel and servicing. The neighbourhood watch group expressed disappointment, stating they had only received fuel twice since receiving the vehicles and have been shouldering the expense themselves.

JOHANNESBURG - The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has stated that the vehicles previously donated to a local crime-fighting volunteer group were transferred to the police due to financial constraints related to vehicle maintenance. Last April, the then-Premier, Nomusa Dube Ncube, committed to supplying the eThekwini Neighbourhood Watch with 36 vehicles.

The office of the current Premier, Thami Ntuli, revealed that a lack of comprehensive planning regarding the vehicles' upkeep, including fuel and servicing expenses, prompted the December decision to offer them to various police stations. However, a document obtained by EWN indicates that the neighbourhood watch was originally slated to receive a monthly stipend of R1,000 for fuel from the provincial government. 'The contract stipulated that the government, as they were donating these vehicles to us, would be responsible for R1,000 petrol per month, they would be responsible for a tracker, and in terms of service and maintenance, we would be liable as the organization they were handing it over to, which we had no problem with,' explained Njabulo Mngenyane, a member of the crime-fighting group. The group asserts that they have only received fuel twice since acquiring the vehicles and have been covering fuel costs themselves
