The retired host of KQED's 'Forum' has struck out on his own.

We caught up with him by phone earlier this week, to chat about what he’s been doing in semi-retirement, including raising a puppy and starting a new podcast. This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity. SFGATE: Let's start with the most important news first. I think I heard you got a dog. What’s the name? SFGATE readers want to know everything.During the pandemic, we got a golden retriever. She's a little bit overactive. Raising a puppy was harder, I think, than taking care of my grandchild, which we also did.
Our puppy’s name is Stella. We've noticed that people of a certain age group will say"Stella" like Marlon Brando did, but younger people will say, “Oh, like Stella McCartney.” There's definitely a generation gap.For years, I taught"A Streetcar Named Desire" in a course on Tennessee Williams and Sam Shepard when I was teaching drama, but we just liked the name.Just one. She is in New York.
