Siya Kolisi is prioritizing earning his place on the Springboks squad over retaining the captaincy. The 33-year-old, who has captained the team 61 times, faces fierce competition for the No 6 jersey. Kolisi, who spent a brief stint with Racing 92 after the 2023 World Cup , has returned to the Sharks and is focused on regaining his form. 'The most important thing for me is to have the chance to play for the Springboks ,' he said. 'Whether I’m captain or not is not in my control.
I just want to play well enough to be part of the team, and to hopefully make it to the 2027 World Cup.' He added, 'My body feels good. It’s nice to be back home. I’ll start training hard again soon.' Former Springboks captains Jean de Villiers and Corne Krige believe Kolisi should continue leading the team. De Villiers acknowledged the need for the captain to consistently perform and earn their spot, which Kolisi is still doing. Krige sees Kolisi as the natural leader for the next two years, citing his on-field presence and widespread support. He believes Kolisi can remain captain until the next World Cup if he stays healthy and performs at his current level. Both former captains recognize the shifting landscape of leadership in rugby, with the single captain model becoming less prevalent. However, they both agree that Kolisi is the ideal choice for the foreseeable future
