Knife-wielding suspect shot, killed by police in Springville

A man was shot and killed by a police officer in Springville early Saturday morning.

Shortly before 1 a.m., officers responded to reports of a man shooting a gun into the air near the Walmart located at 660 South 1750 West, according to a press release from Springville Police.

While one of the responding officers was driving through a parking lot, a man followed closely behind in his vehicle, and later crashed into the patrol car. When the officer got out, the driver threatened him with a knife, and the officer shot the man. Officers and emergency crews immediately began rendering first aid, but the man was later pronounced dead at the scene.

"Preliminary investigation revealed no additional reports or evidence that any shots were fired prior to the officers’ arrival," the press release read.The incident is under investigation by the Utah County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team.
