The new Act reduces drug costs for about 7 million Medicare recipients. It caps pharmaceutical costs for another 50 million recipients at $2,000 per year. And the cost of insulin would be brought under control with a monthly cap of $35 for patients.Here’s some other benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act.
How about this item: $300 billion in direct deficit reduction. This, combined with all of the savings means that American households will be able to cope a little better with a stubbornly high rate of inflation. Most objective observers believe that the Inflation Reduction Act was an historic legislative achievement that put families ahead of powerful interests like the drug companies and the fossil fuel industry. And yes, the Act really does address inflation just as it reduces the deficit.
The political reality is that the loyal opposition is not about to acknowledge these successes. They will continue to rant about inflation even though they voted to a person to oppose efforts to bring it under control. They will continue to point out the cost of groceries and housing without an ounce of regret about ignoring families burdened with education and health care costs.
In an earlier, more collegial time, long before Obama and maybe back to the days of FDR, political leaders checked their partisan tendencies at the door of Congress. They got things done together.
