Todd McLellan has been named the next head coach of the Kings.
According to a press release from the team, McLellan has agreed to a multi-year contract.
McLellan put together a 123-119-24 record during his tenure in Edmonton, with the club winning 46.2 per cent of their games under his guidance. The Oilers reached the post-season once in that span, advancing to the second round in 2016-17 before losing to Anaheim in seven games.for seven years, posting a 311-163-66 record in that time. San Jose earned post-season berths in six of those seven campaigns, reaching the conference final twice with McLellan at the helm.
The Melville, Sask., native joins a Kings squad enduring a period of decline following some sterling championship-laden seasons between 2011 and 2014. This new iteration of the Los Angeles side has missed the playoffs in three of the past five years, including 2018-19, wherein they finished with the second-fewest points in the league and a league-worst minus-61 goal differential. Their two post-season appearances did little to move the needle as well, with the Kings winning just one game against the Sharks in 2015-16 and getting swept by the Golden Knights in Vegas’s run to the Stanley Cup Final last year.
McLellan will be the 29th head coach in Kings history, and the third since Daryl Sutter’s lengthy stint from 2011-17, during which time the club claimed both of their Stanley Cup championships. Los Angeles turned to John Stevens and subsequently Willie Desjardins over the past two years following Sutter’s dismissal.
