and the Queen Consort paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the Second World War, as they capped off their three-day state visit to Germany on Friday.
They visited a memorial in Hamburg to the Kindertransport, or children’s transport, a rescue mission by British humanitarian Nicholas Winton, which helped more than 10,000 Jewish children flee from Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1940. Later, the King stood shoulder-to-shoulder with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on the ruins of St Nikolai, a church that was severely damaged by the Allied bombing of Hamburg in July 1943. The memorial commemorates more than 30,000 people, mostly German civilians, who were killed in Operation Gomorrah.
The King laid a wreath and listened to Hamburg’s Bishop Kirsten Fehrs read the Coventry Litany of Reconciliation, written to commemorate the destruction of the English city of Coventry by German bombers in 1940.It was the King’s first overseas state trip since ascending the throne last year, which has been widely viewedHe originally planned to visit France first, but anti-government protests in the country led both governments to postpone that part of his trip.
During his state visit, the King met with Ukrainian refugees at the Ukraine Arrival Centre Tegel in Berlin, where he tried his hand at table top football and repeatedly said that he was “praying” for them. Kleopatra Tummler, operations manager of the centre, said that he “really showed interest in everyone’s stories”.
