by BMG Research found that a majority of the public still backs the monarchy, but support is weakest among the young and millions are on the fence about the institution.
While the King is more popular now than he was when he was Prince of Wales, according to most research,Around 25 per cent of people said they have become less supportive since he came to the throne in September last year while only 11 per cent are more in favour of the royal family than they were. Most respondents said their views had not changed.
Overall, a slim majority – 52 per cent – back the idea of the monarchy, with 31 per cent saying they strongly support it. 20 per cent are on the fence and 23 per cent, almost a quarter, are opposed to the monarchy. There is a striking age difference in the results. Seventy per cent of those aged 65 or more or back the monarchy while just 15 per cent are against it, while the 18 to 24 age group is almost evenly balanced with 35 per cent in favour and 31 per cent opposed.
BMG’s head of polling Robert Struthers said: “As the UK prepares for the first coronation of a new monarch in over 70 years, there remains a significant degree of support for the monarchy.
