Described as “organic and mechanical,' this collaboration offers a radical sneaker style.
To count the number of sneaker collaborations in the world would be an impossible task. And yet among all those hyped artist partnerships, you have certainly never seen a sneaker like the new Kiko Kostadinov Asics Gel Aurania before, with its single lace mechanism, dramatic cut out, and spliced air pocket heel. Designed by Laura and Deanna Fanning, the twin sister creative directors of, the shoe is a rare shoe for women that will be just as popular with guys.
“I think it would be really limiting if you set yourself out to people-please,” says Deanna Fanning over Zoom, reflecting on the brand’s successes. The designer and her sister Laura are far from “yes” women, and it’s exactly their willingness to challenge customers to try something new that has made their sneakers—and their conceptual, arty ready-to-wear—so popular. The pair try to take a different approach to sneaker design, using the Asics archive and material research as a starting point.
