We chat with Wildflower star Kiernan Shipka about her new film's family dynamics, balancing comedy and drama, and the most memorable moments on set:
Inspired by the true story of director Matt Smuckler's family, Wildflower is a unique coming-of-age story that explores the life one a resilient teenage girl named Bea. Though the story is multigenerational, it is told primarily through the eyes of Bea , whose parents are both intellectually disabled. This causes her to believe they need her constant care, but it also leaves her unsure of how to express her own growing pains.
Kiernan Shipka Talks Wildflower Screen Rant: I know you've said this was a project that immediately had you saying yes. What drew you to Bea or made you most confident about playing her? But everyone brought this level of realness to everything that I love so much as an actor. I've always been really excited by groundedness in performances, and I really keep thinking about a few scenes, like the scene I did in the car with Dash that just felt so natural. I keep using all the same words, but it felt profound in a special way.
Kiernan Shipka: I think the thing that I really liked about Bea's journey was that, in the beginning, she had written a story for herself and wasn't entertaining all the possibilities of life. By the end of the film, her parents are the ones who inspire her to live her life in the way that she wants; to be brave and seek adventure; to be the best version of herself along with her boyfriend and her best friend, and the people around her.
You and Charlie Plummer made an adorable match, and I was surprised I hadn't seen you in something together before. What was it like building a little romcom with him? Every other subsequent take felt so deep and strong in new kinds of ways. That scene definitely challenged me a lot as an actor, but it also helped me grow. If you do something, and it feels real and truthful and deep in a way that feels like a place you don't go to often, it's quite inspiring. It jazzes me in a way and makes me want to do that sort of thing again; to find whatever is down there and buried deep.
