Kicking the can down the road: SA Rugby, franchises' battle ends in awkward stalemate - for now
An anticipated heated debate over Test match hosting fees between the URC franchises and SA Rugby at a general council meeting of the local governing body on Thursday instead saw the parties kick the proverbial can down the road.
The build-up to the forum had been dominated by simmering animosity about the federation's intention of garnering a collective R85 million in guarantees from the six unions hosting home Springbok Tests in 2024, including the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers. While the implementation of a hosting fee would hardly be radical as it's merely a reversion back to the status quo pre-Covid, the URC franchises argue SA Rugby's unilateral decision, without consultation, violates the terms of the overall funding model agreed upon back in September 2020, which decreed that unions would keep 100% of all Test match-day revenues until the end of this year's Bok programme.South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
